What Is a Chin Implant?

Chin implantation one of many kinds of surgery is considered to fall under facial plastic surgery. Implants thereby serve as a biomaterial for the deficiency of defining structure in the lower face, neck, and jawline.

Chin implants are made from silicone, Teflon, or Dacron, among other things, with the aim of improving the projection of an otherwise deficient chin to achieve balance and contouring of the face.

Most of the time, considerations and cautions apply, including initial consultation with an expert facial cosmetic surgeon, who will guide the patient into deciding the most proper chin augmentation alternatives for him or her.

What Are the Types of Chin Implant Surgery?

There are two main procedures for chin implant surgery: augmentation and reduction.

Chin Augmentation/Implants:

Chin augmentation is a surgery to bolster an underprojecting chin, where an implant is placed over the muscle bone. An incision is made either inside the mouth or just under the chin, with a suture after the implant is placed. Patients might experience mild swelling afterward, and they usually return to work a week later.

Chin Reduction Surgery:

Chin reduction surgery, or chin shaving, reduces a set chin or over-projected chin. It is performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure.

The surgery involves an incision made either within the mouth or underneath the chin, where the excess bone is then trimmed, shaped, and contoured. The incisions are closed by suturing afterward.

What Conditions Are Treated by Chin Implant Surgery?

Most individuals with a flat or receding chin would usually look for chin implant surgery as an ultimate treatment that will bring about the desired balance in their face.

Men and women with large-sized noses will also consider the option of chin augmentation to improve their facial harmonization.

Cosmetic surgery for augmenting facial proportions including a chin and jawline is usually performed by plastic surgeons.

Besides this, chin implant surgery will correct congenital deformities or even injuries sustained in accidents.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Chin Implant?

An ideal candidate for a chin implant is someone who:

  1. Is in good general health and at a stable weight
  2. Does have realistic expectations
  3. Is a non-smoker
  4. Is bothered by the appearance of the chin
  5. Has a chin that is either too small or lacking projection
  6. Has skeletal maturity, meaning full growth of the bone is complete, usually by late adolescence
  7. Has realistic expectations regarding the results of chin implant surgery

What Are the Preparations for a Chin Implant?

Chin implant surgery preparation entails special instructions from your healthcare provider. A few health checks, such as laboratory tests and a physical exam, may be performed to determine fitness for surgery. Quit smoking at least a few weeks prior to the operation, if you do.

Certain medications may be discontinued by your healthcare provider in preparation for chin implant surgery. That is why you need to inform your surgeon about all the medications you are taking, including aspirin, anti-inflammatory medications, or herbal supplements. You may be advised to take some antibiotics prior to surgery to help prevent infection.

Your healthcare provider may take some preoperative photographs of your chin and side profile. The photographs will assist your surgeon in procedure planning, acting as a comparison tool for assessing results before and after surgery.

What Happens During the Chin Implant Procedure?

During the chin implant surgery, your care team and the surgeon would:

  • Administer local anesthesia, sedation, or general anesthesia based on the extent and sophistication of the procedure.
  • An incision is created in the mouth along the lower lip crest. Depending on specific indications, the incision can also be performed externally along the chin.
  • Special instruments are used to create a pocket between the incised skin, fat, and other tissues to accommodate the implant, which is inserted and molded to the shape of the patient’s chin bone for a more natural appearance.
  • The incision is then closed using either absorbable stitches or glue.
  • The doctors will then apply dressing and antibiotic ointments.

How Long Does the Chin Implant Procedure Take?

Typically, a chin implant surgical procedure takes less than one hour; however, the duration may increase in the case of concomitant procedures.

What Happens After a Chin Implant?

Instantly after chin implant surgery, there will be applied a dressing for 2-3 days. Tenderness will then be common, and the surgeon will give some medications to help with discomfort afterward.

What Is the Self-Care Plan After a Chin Implant?

Post-chin implant, one should take things easy for at least a week to two weeks. Chewing might be limited on the first days after surgery, so a liquid and soft food diet probably needs to be followed for a couple of days.

Most patients report the feeling of tightness or stretching, which is usually gone within one week. You may return to light activities and stay away from:

  • Heavy Restraining
  • Heavy exertion
  • Bending

Careful adherence to the post-operative instructions provided by the surgeon also contributes significantly to a good recovery.

How Long Does Recovery Take From Chin Implant Surgery?

The swelling goes down after about six weeks following a chin implant surgery and at this time, one can expect to see the surgery’s outcomes.

What Are the Risks Related to Chin Implants?

Chin surgery carries the risks involved in surgical procedures, and these may include minor complications like infection or hematoma formation. On rare occasions, one may also find dislocation or displacement of implants, injuries to peripheral nerves, and, even more rarely, unsatisfactory scars.

Choosing a qualified and experienced facial plastic surgeon will put you in a better position to minimize all those potential complications.

When Are the Results of a Chin Implant Will Be Visible?

In the beginning, patients might feel swelling in their chin area after a chin implant surgery. Some cases may not reach the maximum results of one surgical intervention; as such, another intervention would be necessary.

Some patients would ‘touch up’ their results with injections instead of returning to the operating room.

In any case, a chin implant is a cosmetic surgery that is meant to be permanent. Although time will change other aspects of your aging face, your enhanced chain contour will remain the same.

Do Chin Implants Come in Different Materials and Sizes?

Generally, the installed chin implants are made of silicone, an artificial substance that is flexible. Sometimes, bone is used in surgery in rare cases.

Implants come in several shapes, sizes, and styles. The final selection of which type is best for you is made by your surgeon considering your needs and aesthetic goals.
